Jenny's Memorial Service and Obituary

July 30, 2006

I'd like to share with you (with quiet tears left over from last Tuesday) some of the memorial service for Jenny…it was very nice. Her Aunt Robin spoke some words that brought tears to all and her sister Stephanie read a poem she had written about Jenny……the poem was pretty amazing. After the service, they released many pink balloons, some with a memory card attached, into the sky…..the weather was beautiful with abundant blue sky, and it was very peaceful…..a fond farewell. And, on my desk as a rememberance, a single pink rose and card with Jenny's picture which reads "if tears could build a staircase, and memories were a lane, we would walk right up to Heaven and bring you back again."

Jenny Hayes

Monday, May 15
Jenny went from school in an ambulance to Children's Hospital after not maintaining consciousness. She had felt a bit ill the previous day, but there was no indication that she had developed a serious medical condition. The immediate determination was she had bleeding in the brain, and the focus was to attempt to stabilize her.

On Thursday, May 18, Jenny was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Because of the nature and positioning of the tumor, the doctors have not taken a biopsy of the tumor. A group of specialists are teamed on her case.

Status as of May 23
At this time, Jenny is not conscious. Her family is with her at Children's Hospital. They desire our thoughts and prayers for hope, but are also preparing for the possibility of the worst.

Earlier this week, Jenny received a very special visitor -- "Sugar Bear," a golden retriever stopped by briefly... "Shug" climbed up on a chair at Jenny's bed-side to give her some kisses on her hand.

From the family; We feel and appreciate the tremendous outpouring of prayer, love and support -- thank you all so much!

I was able to talk to Pat a little today. He wanted me to pass on how grateful they are for all the love and support they are receiving. They really enjoy reading the comments being posted to the blog site and all the cards and sentiments that are coming in. Jenny's condition has not changed much this week. From what he said, their priority right now is to just make her comfortable. They have an extensive team of doctors from all over the nation working together and believe that she is in the best available care possible. Please keep the prayers and well wishes coming and as I hear more I will post an update.

To the many wonderful people concerned about our beloved daughter and sister, Jenny Hayes... here is an update as of June 11th.

Jenny's prognosis remains unchanged -- exceedingly poor. While the exceptional medical team at Children's assesses her as clinically unresponsive -- she is present to her family. Her situation is the combined result of an inoperable brain tumor in her brain-stem and the acute injuries it caused when it's abnormal blood vessel system ruptured and bled on Monday, May 15th.

Since then Jenny's condition has changed frequently from critically stable to dire to critically stable again as complications from the tumor and the bleed arose -- Jenny continues to surprise her doctors by hanging on. We have hardly left her side with critical care decision demanded daily, constantly attending to her comfort and praying for her recovery -- sustained by the incredible support from so many of you.

However, after nearly a month, it is now apparent that the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is not able to provide her continued care and with her condition temporarily stable again, we are being asked to make difficult decisions -- the hardest of which are still in front of us.

Please continue your prayers for Jenny's healing -- a miracle is her only hope... and for wisdom for her medical team and her family, of course... and for strength to help us all as we try to somehow survive this tragic and devastating ordeal.

God Bless you all! With deepest appreciation Pat, Sandy, Stephanie and Jenny Hayes.

We have moved out of intensive care to the first floor, regular medical unit. Train 1140. Visiting hours are still 10:00am till 8:00 pm. She should be a little easier to visit now that she is stable and not being seen by many doctors each day. She is off almost all machines and tubes, but she is still not conscious.

Thank you to everyone for the cards and E-mails, the prayers, the yard work, the posters and stuffed animals. You are all helping to keep us going.

Keep praying for a miracle for our sweet Jenny.

Pat, Sandy and Stephanie
